Indonesia has many mineral-rich mines that are abandoned but not licensed. These mines often attract locals scavenging for leftover gold ore without the proper safety gear. Mining accidents occur across Indonesia due to landslides, especially during the rainy season.
Last year, six people died when an illegal gold mine collapsed in Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi. Also in 2020, 11 miners died in Sumatra in a landslide caused by heavy rain.
